Nechung , The State Oracle of Tibet
Venerable Thupten Ngodrup,aka Nechung Kuten or affectionately Kuten La,
the Medium of Tibet's State Oracle, serves as a cabinet-level member of the Tibetan Government in Exile. He has served in this capacity for over twenty years. In earlier times there were hundreds of oracles throughout Tibet.
Today is a different environment.
Where once many oracles were consulted by the Tibetan government, today there is only Nechung aka Kuten La.
The phenomenon of oracles remains an important part of the Tibetan way of life. Though many may believe the purpose of the oracles is just to foretell the future, in actuality the Oracle is also a protector and healer.
Notwithstanding their primary function is to protect the Buddha Dharma and its practitioners.
Through him manifests Dorje Drak-den ,the principal protector divinity of the Tibetan government and the Dalai Lama.
It is because of this that Nechung Kuten is given the rank of a deputy minister in the exiled Tibetan government hierarchy.
In some respects, the responsibility of Nechung and the responsibility of the Dalai Lama towards Tibet are the same, though each may approach their service in a different way. Each is called upon to be a leader regardless of their specific approach.
